Only when they finally face each other do they experience the joy of meeting their match. But rather than exult, each champion feels bereft, longing to find an opponent who can truly test them. In their respective domains of backyard, Mom's office and kitchen, the mighty warriors Rock (Rick Pendzich), Paper (Austin Nelson Jr.) and Scissors (Karen Estrada) battle and defeat all challengers, including a sassy Georgia peach, a computer printer, a roll of tape in a plastic dispenser, a half-eaten bag of trail mix, even frozen dinosaur-shaped breaded chicken nuggets. (If you're a fan of the book, the show sticks pretty closely to it.) Yes, in both forms it's a fanciful origin story for the hand game played around the world. Writer John Maclay and composer Eric Nordin adapted the musical from a lively picture book by Drew Daywalt with illustrations by Adam Rex. Fortunately, for people who like rock musicals, larger than life characters and occasional snarky asides, the show returned Saturday with everyone ready to rumble. The COVID-19 pandemic shut down First Stage's world premiere production of "The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors" in March 2020 shortly after it opened.
